Guntars Sietins is a Latvian artist born in Kuldiga in 1962. His secondary studies take place at the Riga Applied Arts School in the  Department of design and decoration (1978-1982). He graduates in 1988 from the State Academy of Fine Arts, Graphic Department, in his own country.
The winning of the gold medal will be crowning the end of his studies and immediatley he decides to keep on learning etching and its techniques.

As an uncontested European master of mezzotint, a tremendously complex technique, Guntars Sietins is today teaching Arts at the Fine Arts Academy in Riga and running the Graphic Department.

Guntars Sietins' graphic work is intense and subtile. The infinite range of blacks sometimes diluted in warm brown or green color turn out to be deeply attrative and contemplative ; the work is about space and volume, ligth and darkness. The eye - the one that's gazing down at one of Sietins'mezzotint - is proceeding in a « another space » in a timeless zone, between absolute closeness and infinity. The artist, meticulous, creates a new reality in which human presence is apparently totally missing. The Sietins' metallic spheres – sometimes chestnuts – levitate somewhere in the depth of surrealist landscapes which seem  to hesitate between ground ans sky, often reflecting a clever canvas of letters and figures.
The mastering of mezzotint by Guntars Sietins is amazing. His work is filled with fluffy dark shadows and precise details from where appears the total balance of structural elements, the shapes keeping an illusory reality.
The artist assigns a symbolic meaning to objects. The artwork becomes philosophical.

Very active, Guntars Sietins has been working on illustrations for several books. He has also been involved in the graphism of some Latvian coins and notes when Latvia joined the Euro. Likewise, the artist conceived few commemorative medals (Riga University for example). Very commited, he is regularly attending international meetings on etching and most particularly on mezzotint art, publishing papers in specialized reviews. He is quite often asked as a jury member and since 2006 he is member of the Center for Contemporary Fine Art Printmaking "Grafikens Hus" in Sweden

The artist who shows his work since the mid-eighties obtained many personal exhibitions both in his country and abroad (Latvia, Germany, Sweden, United States, etc). On a regular basis (more than 110 times) he takes part in the major international collective happenings related to graphic art: Maastricht Biennal in Netherlands, Krakow in Poland, Varna in Bulgaria, Aomori in Japan, Seoul in Korea, Cremona in Italy, etc), winning several distinctions and more than ten first prizes. Few of his etchings have been acquired in Russian collections (Moscow, Kaliningrad), Lithuanian (Kaunas), Estonian (Tallinn) and Latvian (Riga, Kuldiga).
